Naguabo

18 km (11 miles) southwest of Fajardo.

In this municipality’s downtown, pastel buildings give the main plaza the look of a child’s nursery: a golden-yellow church on one side faces a butter-yellow city hall, and a pink-and-blue amphitheater anchors one corner. It’s a good spot for people-watching until the heat drives you to the beach.

Offshore, Cayo Santiago (aka Monkey Island) is the site of some of the world’s most important rhesus monkey research. A small colony of monkeys was introduced to the island in the late 1930s, and since then scientists have been studying their habits and health, especially as they pertain to the study of diabetes and arthritis. You can’t land at Cayo Santiago, but Captain Frank López sails a small tour boat, La Paseadora, around it.

GETTING HERE AND AROUND

Naguabo is about an hour’s drive from San Juan, just south of Fajardo along Route 31, off Route 53. From Route 31, turn down Calle Garzot to reach the town square. Although públicos run to and from Naguabo, public transportation within Naguabo is extremely limited, so a rental car is your best option.

; Beaches

Playa Húcares

BEACH—SIGHT | Playa Húcares is the place to be. Although the strip is a little run-down and the beach itself can be a bit messy, an authentic vibe permeates the casual outdoor eateries and funky little shops that vie with the water for your attention. Locals sell ice out of trucks, and the heavy bass of reggaetón music thumps from the windows of passing cars. Two Victorian-style houses anchor one end of the waterfront promenade, a dock with excursion boats anchors the other, and a red-green-and-blue-painted bridge connects both sides of the town. Amenities: food and drink. Best for: sunset. EOff Rte. 3, south of Naguabo.

La Paseadora
